Body Adiposity Index (BAI) Calculator

What is Body Adiposity Index (BAI)?

Body Adiposity Index (BAI) is a method of estimating body fat percentage without using body weight. It was developed as an alternative to Body Mass Index (BMI) and uses hip circumference and height measurements to estimate the amount of body fat.

The BAI Formula

The Body Adiposity Index is calculated using the following formula:

\[BAI = \frac{Hip Circumference}{Height^{1.5}} - 18\]

Where:

  • Hip Circumference is measured in centimeters
  • Height is measured in meters

Step-by-Step BAI Calculation

  1. Measure hip circumference in centimeters
  2. Measure height in meters
  3. Apply the BAI formula: \[BAI = \frac{Hip Circumference}{Height^{1.5}} - 18\]

Example Calculation

Let's calculate the BAI for a person with a hip circumference of 100 cm and a height of 1.7 m:

  1. \(Hip Circumference = 100 \text{ cm}\)
  2. \(Height = 1.7 \text{ m}\)
  3. \(BAI = \frac{100}{1.7^{1.5}} - 18 \approx 26.8\%\)

The red portion of the bar represents the calculated BAI (26.8%) relative to 50%.

Interpreting BAI Results

BAI results can be interpreted as follows:

  • Underweight: Less than 8%
  • Normal: 8% to 25%
  • Overweight: Greater than 25%

It's important to note that BAI is just one measure of body composition and should be considered alongside other health indicators and professional medical advice.
