Creatinine Clearance (CRCL) Calculator

What is Creatinine Clearance?

Creatinine Clearance (CRCL) is a test used to estimate the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which is a measure of kidney function. It indicates how efficiently the kidneys are filtering waste from the blood.

The Cockcroft-Gault Formula

This calculator uses the Cockcroft-Gault equation to estimate Creatinine Clearance:

\[CRCL = \frac{(140 - Age) \times Weight}{72 \times Serum Creatinine} \times [0.85 \text{ if female}]\]

Where:

  • CRCL is Creatinine Clearance in mL/min
  • Age is in years
  • Weight is in kg
  • Serum Creatinine is in mg/dL

Calculation Steps

  1. Gather the required information: age, weight, serum creatinine level, and gender.
  2. Convert weight to kg if necessary (1 lb = 0.453592 kg).
  3. Convert serum creatinine to mg/dL if necessary (1 μmol/L = 0.0113 mg/dL).
  4. Apply the Cockcroft-Gault formula.
  5. If the patient is female, multiply the result by 0.85.

Example

Let's calculate the CRCL for a 50-year-old male weighing 70 kg with a serum creatinine level of 1.2 mg/dL:

\[CRCL = \frac{(140 - 50) \times 70}{72 \times 1.2} = 81.94 \text{ mL/min}\]

Visual Representation

CRCL: 81.94 mL/min

This bar represents the calculated Creatinine Clearance. The green portion shows the CRCL relative to 100 mL/min (normal kidney function).

Interpretation of Results

  • ≥ 90 mL/min: Normal kidney function
  • 60-89 mL/min: Mild kidney dysfunction
  • 30-59 mL/min: Moderate kidney dysfunction
  • 15-29 mL/min: Severe kidney dysfunction
  • < 15 mL/min: Kidney failure

Remember, this calculator provides an estimate of kidney function. For a comprehensive assessment, always consult with a healthcare professional.
